Founded in 2001, ISIFC is an engineering school part of the University of Franche-Comté. It trains about 50 engineers a year in Biomedical Engineering fields, for the industry and care centers.

Our school is authorized by a French Ministerial Institution (Commission des Titres de l'ingénieur) for its training and is EUR-ACE® certified (more info)

Bâtiment principal

This original training is designed to specialist managers for medical devices, which possess a triple culture : technical, regulatory and medical.

Since 2001, the school recruits students to Bachelor -1 minimum of all backgrounds (national competition preparatory classes, Polytech) or recruitement file to obtain a variety of biomedical engineers profiles to reflect the diversity of the sector of Medical Devices. Some arrive with a degree in biology or in physics, others join the school with a degree in electronics or diploma in mechanics. In the case of preparatory classes, profiles are also different (life sciences, mathematics, etc.). Promotions are balanced with 50% of students from life sciences and 50% having completed a course of engineering sciences. Note that 30% of recruited since 2001 have at least one year of medicine, physiotherapy or pharmacy.

The training cycle is multidisciplinary. It is organized in three years with possible deepening optional specialty during the third year : "Biomechanics and microsystems", "Cellular and Tissular Engineering" or "e-Health".

The training consists of four areas of competences :

  • Engineering Sciences (37%)
  • Life sciences and health (16%)
  • Culture générale et d’entreprise (19%)
  • Professional experience (28%)

The last area consists of five internships within hospitals (4 days and 6 weeks), research laboratories (3 months at least), biomedical or pharmaceutical companies (4 months at least). There is also a seasonal internship (4 weeks at least) and two research projects (a tutored project of 100 h during the first year and a project of 135h during the optional module of cell R & D in the third year).

It may be noted  innovation in active learning : Biotika®, a virtual and universitary company. It is a pre-incubation cell for innovative projects specializing in medical devices.

Our references

The school is accredited by the CTI since 2001. It is a member of CDEFI (Commission des Directeurs des Ecoles Françaises d'Ingénieurs). It works closely with the University Hospital of Besançon, with EFS (Etablissement Français du sang), with SNITEM (Syndicat National de l'Industrie des Technologies Médicales), with the pole of competitivity microtechnology Franche Comté and with the Besançon incubator.

The training team consists of 27% of teachers from companies or health centers (UHC, CIC-IT and EFS Besançon). They are fully aware of the new requirements and represent a valuable source of quality training and educational innovation.

ISIFC has focused its training on regulatory, quality and clinical validation and mainly on preclinical validation (experimental testing, modeling, simulations). Most of the team works as a teacher researcher at the University of Franche-Comté in research laboratories : Femto-st (CNRS), IFR 133 (INSERM), "Cancéropole the Grand Est", CHU and EFS Besancon.

The advantages of the this training

Enseignement à l'ISIFC

The aim is to homogenize an audience from various origins. After a year and a half, thanks to the versatility of teachers, the differences vanish. A common work on a research project in the first year gathers, for example, students from mathematics, biology and mechanical engineering. This academic melting pot is rewarding for students. They will compare eg mechanical heart valves with biological valves. Each brings his knowledge from his original training. The option in cell and tissue engineering allows a specialization in medical devices at the border of the drug such as bone plugs against osteoporosis or combined medical devices such as artificial organs or bio implants.

The job of biomedical engineer is a profession in strong emergence. The aging of the population, increasing the quality of surgery and care, increased texts and European and international regulatory guidelines, the emergence of new diseases, the adaptation of new technologies for the diagnosis, for the therapeutic, for the organic engineering, for the technical assistance of disability, of high-level sports or veterinary medicine are major indicators that justified the creation of the ISIFC.

Scientific competences of ISIFC engineers

Les étudiants à l'ISIFC

The ISIFC engineers (308 graduates since 2004) have an excellent mastered of the entire life cycle of a medical device (MD) from the idea to the market. Their main assets are based on regulatory affairs and quality for technologies for Health, the benefit / risk to the patient and pre-clinical investigations analysis. It adds strategies of local (Franche-Comté) tradition, such as mechanical / biomechanics, medical instrumentation and microtechnology with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship or activities such as "tailor-made product for health"..

ISIFC engineers have a good mastered of regulatory and of clinical use of medical devices. They are able to compile a technical file for the placing on the market (CE, FDA).

They are able to manage a biomedical service in a public or private care house (knowledge of equipment ranges available on the market, medical device regulation, development of specifications for equipment procurement and procurement costs).
